The Jesuit-Guaraní Mission of San Cosme y Damián

Just 200 meters from the lodge, in the heart of the town, stands the majestic Jesuit-Guaraní Mission of San Cosme y Damián. Its large portico leads to an imposing architectural complex, remarkable for its simplicity and excellent state of preservation.

The church, both modest and monumental, remains the center of community life: masses, weddings, and gatherings continue to be held there, keeping alive the legacy of the 18th century. After the expulsion of the Jesuits, the locals took ownership of the buildings, which for decades housed the school, courthouse, and municipal offices. Today, the church and school are the only surviving structures of the thirty original reductions.

The complex is more than ruins—it is a living space, deeply tied to the identity of its people. Every wall tells the story of coexistence between Jesuits and guaraníes, a legacy that can still be felt in the town’s daily life.
