San Cosme y Damián is the epicenter of the Jesuit-Guaranà Route in Paraguay, a cultural journey across historic towns, museums, and UNESCO World Heritage Missions. This route immerses visitors in a landscape of red earth, lush vegetation, and the remnants of a glorious past.
Heading west, the first day takes us through rural roads lined with ranches and cattle fields. This journey is a true immersion into the origins of mestizo Paraguay, where spirituality, art, and community life intertwined in a unique chapter of American history.
Crossing a rugged landscape dedicated to cattle raising and peaceful villages, you will visit San Ignacio Guazú, Santa MarÃa de Fe, Santiago, and Santa Rosa de Lima. Museums, artisan workshops, and traditional Indian houses reveal the richness of Jesuit heritage. We recommend stopping for a homemade lunch with a rural family.

On the second day, the route heads southeast, where the scenery shifts: palm groves and yerba mate plantations frame Paraguay’s most emblematic missions. Exotic landscapes of rolling hills and shades of green accompany the journey.
Here you’ll discover the UNESCO World Heritage Missions of SantÃsima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, the best preserved in the country. Nearby, you’ll enjoy a yerba mate tasting in Bella Vista, at South America’s very first Mate Bar, where you can try everything from traditional tereré to innovative blends.
The day concludes with a stunning video mapping show among illuminated ruins, a spectacular blend of history and technology.
